About Kenya

Overview

Five drill rig equipped teams are in place and wells are being drilled at this time. As noted earlier, this project is overseen by Boards of Kenyan community leaders with goals of making safe water available not only in Kenya, but eventually in Uganda and Tanzania as well. This effort has alreaady benefitted thousands, and has the opportunity to benefit hundreds of thousands of impoverished people in rural areas of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda if only the funds can be made available. Drilling wells is much faster and safer than hand digging wells and drilled wells are less apt to become contaminated. Equipment costs aside, because of labor and material costs incorporated into hand dug wells, drilled wells can actually be installed less expensively than hand dug wells.

The goal is to set up a unique program that is
non-profit and self sustaining.

It takes 10 workers laboring 10 hours a day in dangerous conditions for 6 days a week for one month (26 working days - 2600 man hours) to complete one water well by hand. With a drill rig it takes a team of 5 workers laboring 6 days to complete the same well (300 man hours). Drilling is much safer and the finishing of the wells (after the equipment is paid for) is less expensive. Hand dug wells cannot be installed during the rainy season's (in this part of the world there are two rainy seasons in the year). The Drilling of Wells is much less affected by rain.

Costs charged for installing a well (whether dug or drilled) include: a fair wage for those doing the actual work. (Board Members are volunteers and are only paid a minimal cost for attending Board Meetings.) The cost of materials used, and wear and tear on the equipment are elements of the cost as well. Costs also include a charge to purchase additional equipment needed to expand the program ... but no profits.

Initially this project was sponsored by only four small churches working with my wife and I as the American coordinators. I am a Civil Engineer and we have traveled to Kenya six times since 2005. There we have trained workers and have worked with the Board develop in them them business management skills, We are sensitive to the differences of cultures and have successfully brought this project from a concept to an active and producing organization that is being equipped with American made drilling equipment that is capable of meeting most of the conditions that they may encounter.

We welcome and encourage outside organizations to work along side of us.

As noted in the "HOW TO" section of this website, and we are interested in establishing an "umbrella group" (a loose organization) made up of people that are involved in providing water supplies anywhere in Africa. The purpose of the organization would be to share knowledge and experience so we are not all "reinventing the wheel".

Attached in the "DOWNLOADS" section of this website is a CHRONOLOGY (history) of this project from its beginnings in 2005 to the present day. Reading it, you can clearly see God's hand in how this project has progressed.

A "PowerPoint Show" which is in pictorial form with a running commentary on what we are doing in Kenya is available upon him to request. This show is an hour-long presentation which in its first half covers the water project, and in the second half covers the associated ministries. Although it was recorded in 2007, it accurately depicts our work there. It can be obtained by request using the "CONTACT US" section of this website. If you request a copy, it will be necessary for you to provide a mailing address.

Several newspaper articles that cover this ministry are also included in the DOWNLOADS section of this website.

Feed a person and he eats one meal, teach him to fish and he will feed himself for the rest of his life.

Once equipped, eventually our prayer is that the drill teams will be able to drill water wells without further support from overseas. This program is intended to establish a legacy that should continue to meet needs for a long time to come.

, wells can be drilled much faster, at less cost, and far safer than the conventional hand digging of wells.

Jesus answered:
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst."
